If you’ve read Fear of Air Travel (Part 1) and completed the first three milestones, you’re almost halfway to your destination of overcoming your fear. Let’s recap those milestones:
- Create a travel bucket list.
- Choose your top destination and start researching.
- Select a travel date and request time off from work.
If you haven’t completed these steps, take a moment to ensure you’re not rushing through the process. Overcoming fear of air travel is important and not to be taken lightly, but if you’re ready to face your fears head-on and book your travel immediately, that’s also an option. Either way, reading this article shows that you’re tired of missing out on travel experiences.
Now that you have your travel bucket list, done preliminary research on your top destination, chosen a travel buddy, and requested time off from work, we can move on to the next steps:
Step 4: Create a budget
Knowing how much you can afford for airfare, accommodations, food, and activities will relieve anxiety. Setting realistic expectations and not overspending will minimize stress leading up to your trip and make boarding the plane easier.
Step 5: Research thoroughly
Airfare and hotel costs are usually the most expensive parts of a trip. Ensure you have a passport if traveling internationally. Research the city and the adventures you want to experience. Book your hotel early, check hotel reviews and ensure hotel deposits are refundable. Remember to focus on the on-the-ground experience, not just the fear of air travel.
Step 6: Continue researching and get excited about the upcoming adventures.
Focus on your hobbies and the things you’ve always dreamed of doing in the city you’re visiting.
Step 7: Book your airline ticket.
This may be scary, but focus on the comfort of air travel rather than the fear. Select a window seat for a more enjoyable flight. If your budget allows, consider upgrading to business class or a seat with more legroom for added comfort and to suppress anxiety.
Step 8: Consult your physician for guidance on reducing anxiety and fear of air travel. They may recommend over-the-counter or prescription medication to help you relax during the flight.
Step 9: Arrive at the airport early on the day of your trip.
For domestic flights, arrive at the airport three hours before your scheduled boarding time; for international flights, arrive four to five hours early. This will give you enough time to navigate the airport. Even if you have extra time on your hands, find your gate and stay close by in case there are gate changes or delays. Sit, relax, and people watch. People watching will certainly ease your tension and reduce any last minute fears you may be experiencing.
Trust yourself and hop on board. You have what it takes to overcome this hurdle and live a life filled with adventure. Enjoy checking off trips from your bucket list, one by one!
